Home Internet Router Problems?
I've been fighting a problem with my home Internet router/wireless access point for about a YEAR now. I'd replaced every piece of equipment that I have (router, switch) to no avail. At least once a day the router AND cable modem would "lock-up" and I would have to cycle power on both of them to get things going again. After a year this had become frustrating to say the least.
The cable guy told me that this is a known compatibility issue between Linksys routers and their equipment. This of course was after I had replaced my OLD Linksys router with a NEW Linksys router in an attempt to solve the problem. Thanks Linksys.
I went so far as to plug a switch in between the router and the modem and run Netmon (Network monitor app from MSFT) to see what was going on when the lock-up occured. What I saw was thousands of ARP requests. Without going into what that means, I was able to then search the Internet for that symptom, and not only did I find someone with the same problem, I found the solution. I've now been running for 4 days without ANY problems.
The solution was to turn my Linksys router into a Linksys router running Open Source router software from DD-WRT.
DD-WRT is an open source community that provides software that you can use to REPLACE the manufacturers software on your router. While this is NOT a step for the faint hearted (because if you screw it up you will be buying a new router), it fixed my problem and I'm now a HUGE fan of the DD-WRT community!
If you are having router problems that you can't figure out -- consider DD-WRT!
